Yes, buzzard is the proper term for what a lot of people would consider a hawk. Many people confuse buzzards with vultures, thinking they are the same thing, but they are very different. Any raptor in the genus Buteo are buzzards. Some other birds that are buzzards (even though we don't call them buzzards here in the US) are Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, Swainson's Hawks, Broad-winged Hawks, and Rough-legged Hawks, but there are many more. They have big broad wings and relatively short tails.

The only birds that are true hawks are birds in the genus Accipiter. We only have 3 in the US, which are Cooper's Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, and Goshawks. These birds have very long tails and relatively short wings.

I hope this helps!

Yes, it helps a lot! Thank you so much, Cryss! I had no idea that 'buzzard' and vulture were two different kinds of birds entirely, not that the majority of hawks around my neighborhood actually fall into that category. This was extremely informative. We have both Red tailed and Red shouldered hawks, and I'm pretty sure we have Cooper's here too. Also Peregrine falcons, which are always breathtaking to see darting between houses on the tail of a bird... Are vultures the only birds that eat decaying meat, then? I don't think I've ever seen a hawk eating something on the side of the road.

Thanks again for taking the time to inform me, I really enjoy learning about the animals I admire! Hope you had a good Christmas!

Just about all birds of prey are opportunistic, which basically means that if they are hungry, they absolutely will try to eat fresh road kill. But Vultures are the ones that are designed to eat rotting and decaying meat. They primarily only eat carrion with only a few exceptions.

No problem, I am happy to help! My Christmas was great as my Red-tailed Hawk and I were successful during our hunt this afternoon. I hope your Christmas was good as well! :)

Will you be bringing Thief to the meet (which I still need to register for)?

I love Sia :)

Yes, Thief will absolutely be with me. I plan to hunt with him down there. I lucked out, I am being registered as a guest through my falconer friend up here. I have all the money I need for a hotel room, his gas, and the banquet too. I am SO excited!! Do you know when the meet actually is? Or where?

It's in Abilene, which is way up North in Texas. I believe it's January 16 if I remember correctly

Yeah, they have a new website but even I have trouble finding it. They have a FB group for THA members only. I'll see if I can find anything on it. I get their emails so I'll check that, too. If I find something I'll forward it

I may end up getting a membership when I am there. I'll probably be cheaper in the long run for me if I plan to keep going to the meets. I am so excited! It's like 2 or 3 weeks away!
